Virtual Tour of Langham Glass

Adding the Colour

The glass in the furnace is pure, colourless crystal. Colour is added at the marvering stage after the glass has been gathered. Specially produced coloured glass, which comes in powder, granule or lump form is used. The use and control of colour is one of the most demanding and technically exacting aspects of glass making.

Annealing

Because of the various heating and cooling stages it goes through, every piece of completed glass has to be 'annealed' in special annealing ovens before it can be released for finishing.

This process, an initial re-heating, and then a slow, controlled cooling, evens out the stresses which build up inside the glass as it is handled, and which, if left untreated, can result in the spontaneous shattering of the formed item! Once the annealing is complete the glass goes to the finishing shop where it is cut and polished.
